Have a space in your house that needs a little help or maybe a lot of help? Don’t get overwhelmed. You just have to break it down in three steps.
“You got this! – (And if you don’t call me :)”
Step One – Figure out how your room needs to function. Who’s going to use this room? Is it a common area that everyone will use? Do you want it to be comfortable and cozy or do you want it to be a show stopper? Is this a room that only you will use? A place all your own to browse the web, journal your ideas, be creative or just to escape. Figure out what you really want in the room. What can you use that you already have? What needs to go? What needs to come in so that your room is exactly what you want it to be.
Step Two – What do you love? Check out pictures of rooms online and in magazines. Collect pictures of spaces that you love that catch your attention, that you are drawn to. Save the pictures online to a Pinterest folder and label what room it’s for. Save the pictures from magazines in a folder labeled for that room. Then take your time and look through them all. Do they look similar or do they all look different? What style or styles are you drawn too? Do you see the same colors in them? What about the furniture, the lighting — really notice these things! This is your style. It doesn’t matter what you call it, just that you can identify and embrace it. Once you have an idea of your style use it to guide each choice. Love the color blue? Make sure you include it in your room somehow without worrying whether it’s trendy or not. This is a great way to decide on a color palette for your room.
How much do you want to spend? Write down what you can use that you already have and figure out where you will use it. Then write down what you need to purchase to get your room to what you want it to be. Look online or go to stores and get prices on these items. Shop around! You will also need to decide if you want to paint walls or furniture. Can you paint these things yourself or not? You can save money by painting your existing furniture instead of buying new pieces. Get prices from a painter if you are unable to do it yourself. You’ll use all these costs to develop a budget for what you will spend on your project.
What room do you want to change? I’d love to know!
